Un día a día nuevo y más valeroso: del diseñador al «agente de cambio social»

Los modelos económicos, medioambientales, sociales, biológicos, políticos y científicos en los que tanta confianza hemos depositado a lo largo de los últimos ciento cincuenta años para que articulen nuestra existencia diaria se muestran cada vez más insuficientes para lidiar con la impredecibilidad y las turbulencias a que nos enfrentamos en un entorno poscataclísmico. La crisis económica, WikiLeaks, el malestar político en el Medio Oriente y los trastornos medioambientales que estamos presenciando en todo el mundo son ejemplos de un tiempo agitado y serán, probablemente, cada vez más frecuentes. Más que algo ocasional que tiene lugar cada diez años, acabarán representando la normalidad, sentando las bases de nuestra nueva existencia.

Para prosperar como sociedad en un entorno cada vez más alterado se requiere un cambio significativo desde un sistema estático y rígido a otro más fluido y flexible. En el futuro, se progresará más a base de saltos que mediante pasos que permitan un avance gradual. La consecuencia directa será que, en lugar de analizar problemas aislados a los que ofrecer soluciones temporales, el pensamiento del futuro diseñador habrá de plantearse enfoques más amplios y holísticos. A Braver new Everyday: From Designer to “Social Change Agent”

The economic, environmental, societal, biological, political and scientific models which for the past 150 years we have relied upon so heavily to provide structure to our daily lives are increasingly becoming inadequate to deal with the unpredictability and turbulence we are facing in a post-cataclysmic environment. The economic downturn, WikiLeaks, the political unrest in the Middle East and environmental disturbances we are witnessing around the world are all examples of turbulent times which are only likely to increase in frequency. Rather than being an occasional occurrence every ten years, they will represent normality, redefining the fundamentals of our new existence.

A significant shift from a static and rigid system to a more fluid and flexible one is needed in order to fully embrace and thrive as a society in an increasingly disruptive environment. The progression of events in the future will occur in leaps rather than incremental steps and as a direct result the mindset of the future designer will have to consider more widespread and holistic approaches rather than just looking at isolated problems followed by temporary solutions.
